QUEER LISBON Lisbon, Portugal
Queer Lisboa – International Queer Film Festival is the first Portuguese Film Festival dedicated exclusively to screening gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and transsexual themed films, a genre known as Queer Cinema. This is a genre that outbreaks with increasing expression in major international film festivals and it’s the goal of Queer Lisboa to program what is more relevant in aesthetic and narrative terms in the worldwide panorama, trying to compensate the fact that the access to this cinema is restricted to the mainstream audience.
The premiere of two of the most remarkable films of the current Brazilian Queer Cinema, Blue Blood, by Lirio Ferreira, and Futuro Beach, by Karim Aïnouz; an intimate look into the life of one of the most influential intellectuals of the twentieth century in the documentary Regarding Susan Sontag; the Portuguese representation with Fish Tail, by Joaquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel; the presentation of two short film programs and video-installations, which confront the concepts of public and private, with a special focus on the Middle East and on the work of Roy Dib and Akram Zaatari; a tribute to the influential photographer and director Bob Mizer and an evening of performances with various artists from Porto and international ones working queer themes are some of the highlights of the Queer Porto 1 – International Queer Film Festival. Teatro Municipal Rivoli hosts the Official Competition, with 12 fictions and documentaries in competition, reflecting a growing trend in queer cinema of an intersection between fiction and documentary genres. The festival features a total of 28 films from 13 countries.
