The Quest for the Perfect Man

The Quest for the Perfect Man

Bob Mizer shot nearly 10,000 nude men in about half a century. If you crunch the numbers that comes out to roughly 5 models per week. And if you consider that many of these models sat for more than one session, and that Mr. Mizer also produced publications, film reels, and videos, you’ll get a sense of just how prolific he was. The AMG collection is almost fully intact, save a few film reels and photo sets, which means there is a lot to sort through to get to the real gems. When you produce as much as Mizer did, concessions have to be made for human error and technical malfunction.

The hunt for the perfect photograph is a long one, but no less satisfying. It may start with a photo from Physique Pictorial, a model’s name, or just a vague theme. I’ve spent days on end tracking down a particular set, not because of the cataloging system - though Mr. Mizer did have a unique one - but because of the shear volume of the collection. I sometimes wonder, if it took Mr. Mizer almost fifty years to build this collection, how many years would it take to go through each and every slide? Maybe I’ll never know. Perhaps I’ll have the time someday to crunch those numbers. In the mean time, I’ll keep searching endlessly for the perfect man, deep in the stacks of the AMG archives.
